For my blog i chose the WILTON DYPTYCH. What stood out in this piece from the other generally bland artwork in the 14th century is the fact that there is a ridiculous amount of angels gathered and cluttered around mary and jesus. In the left panel it looks like a king and other royalty figures have gathered to praise and give offerings to christ, because if they dont all of those angels are gonna beat the royalty out of them(just kidding)haha. Anyway the movement in the right panel that the blue puts off is pretty cool and gets your eye moving. All in all this is a nice flashy piece that shows devotion to religion and seems to have been a little worn over the years.
It actually looks like Christ appears on both panels (holding the lamb, a reference to His sacrifice on the left side). The blues are so vivid and definitely draw my eye into the piece but I feel like it is so unbalanced with all of the weight being placed on the right.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely with the unbalanced feeling of the peice. I feel it would be better in my opinion if it was just the right panel alone, although you dont get the whole meaning. Also it does look like christ holding the lamb and would good be reference, but i think i later read that its just another person of royalty giving offerings. Either way makes sense.
DeleteI enjoy this piece that you choose because there is a great amount of detail put in the clothing of the people. The looks of the people are realistic but the art still seem very two dimensional. The right panel is very eye catching to me because of the use of color and repetition, but is very cluttered also. I think that the purpose of the left panel because it is not as appealing is to lead you where they are looking to the right panel.
ReplyDeleteYou have some good thoughts, Chris. It may be that this asymmetrical composition was well thought out with great purpose.
