San Girolamo

For this post i chose Caravaggios San Girolamo. I chose this piece because i actually really like Caravaggios paintings, and this one caught my eye because it seemed so intense and deep. It looks like this character is a saint judging by the advanced and detailed halo behind his head. The red cloth that he wears also seems to have some importance of who he is and what he is about. I am loving the fact that it is light on the side that he is working and very dark on the side of the skull. It seems to give a very haunting feeling that maybe death or something of the sort is watching his moves. I dont know exactly what this piece means, but i would say that he's trying to find or translate something important in these holy books and maybe time is running out for this old saint? Overall i like the dark vibe and feeling of his work here. : )

  1. In this piece San Girolamo by Caravaggio it really portrays a lot of signs of death. Such signs as the skull and how weak and skinny he looks. The piece is kind of creepy because of the skull staring at him. but the piece also shows a sign of hope that he will end up in heaven when he dies because it looks like he is reading and studying the bible. He does also have a halo around his head but it is very dark. That may be a symbol of that he has sinned recently and that his halo is wearing away or there may just be a lot of shadowing on the halo. This piece is impressive because of the amount of details and mystery Caravaggio had put into it. Even though it is quite creepy overall I like this piece.

  2. It is interesting that Caravaggio uses mainly a monochromatic color scheme and then throws this giant swash of red to draw the viewer into the painting. The skull seems to echo the saint - maybe he is ruminating about the end of man.
